THE MACANDREW TESTIMONIAL.

The meeting convened for last Tuesday at the ■ Masonic Hall, Port Chalmers, of the supporters of 1 Mr James Macandrew, was but sparsely attended, only fourteen persons being present. The Mayor was in the chair, and in his opening address stated that the question of a testimonial to Mr Macandrew had beea submitted to the Chairmen of Road Boards, and they had promised co-operation. The speaker then proceeded to eulogise the character of the late Superintendent of the late Province of Otago, and was sure that although the meeting was so meagerly attended man j at the Port not present would readily testify to their recognition of his services and sterling character in a substantial manner. The speaker hoped that some of those present would enroll themselves on the Committee. Mr Reid and one or two others thought that the cart had been placed before the horse, inasmuch that the proper coarse to have been pursued at the fiist would have beea to have called a public meeting' of citizens for the purpose of electing a committee. At the same time, it was hoped there would be a general unity to give effect to the propositions advanced. After further conversation, the names of Messrs Reid and Fullerton were added to the Committee list, and canvassers were appointed to the wards of the town as follows : — High Ward — Messrs Murray and Dench ; Middle Ward — Messrs M'Kinlay and Fnllerton; South Ward— Messrs Miller and Reid ; East Ward — Messrs J. Lang and the Mayor. It was resolved that the Committee should meet in the Town Hall that night week, and, if requisite, that the subscription lists be kept open for a fortnight. The meeting terminated in the usual manner.
