A MINER'S SUGGESTION.

A miner of Gold Hill, in a communication to the News, in reference to injuries from the sudden lowering of cages upon men working in the shaft, says : "Such an accident need never occur in a shaft which is being sunk by means of cages. ' Place a bell on the fifth set of timbers from the bottom of the shaft, and move it downward aa the shaft progresses deeper and additional sets of timber are put in. Have it so arranged that the cage shall ring it in passing, whether going down or coming up. This will give good warning and allow the men in the shaft an opportunity to look out for themselves." The suggestion is doubtless a good one, provided the bell can be so placed and fixed as to be sure of giving the alarm, and not liable to get out of order; for, in the latter case, the remedy would be worse than the present method ' of stopping the cage before lowering clear to the bottom. — Virginia Enterprise.

The Tuapeka Times mentions that Mr Cox had a trial crushing at the O.P.Q. Co.'s battery, of two tons of stone from the Lammerlaw Pioneer Quartz Crushing Co.'s claim, on Wednesday last, when the very satisfactory result of loz. 7dwts. per ton was obtained.

Our Macetown correspondent, telegraphing to us on the Bth, says :— « The work of removing the heavy quartz-crushing machinery from Arrowtown to Macetown reefs was commenced yesterday, and was thoroughly successful. One 14cwt. piece was taken through in 10 hours. The conveyances made for the special purpose' answered splendidly, and there was no hitch whatever."
