PUBLIC SCHOOLS FOR ITALY.

Under the name of the •* Societa Italiana di Educazione liberate," a society has been formed during the last year in Italy which bids fair to exercise no inconsiderable influence over the future of that country. The first small and quasi-private school, which owed its existence chiefly to the determination and liberality of Senator Marchese Alfieri, promises shortly to develope into a national institution. The want of a University which would provide a high-class liberal education and confer degrees upon the sons of the upper and upper middle classes, is one which has long been felt in Italy. Among gentlemen's sons especially the Btudy of social and political economy, constitutional and indeed general history and constitutional law, has been almost ignored, and the Colleges founded and in part supported by the Italian Liberal Education Society undertake to remedy this defect. In an opening speech by President Alfieri allusion was made to the superiority of the English Bystem of education :—: — "In England boys are taught to rely on themselves ; in Italy they are kept in leading strings. Here the result is attained by stringent rules, by harassing regulations, by an effort of me* mory, in England by a healthy development of mind and body." The Society, which is under Royal patronage, proposes establishing schools after the model of our public schools. — Times.

Historical I— -Vide " Jurors' Reports and Awards, New Zealand Exhibition." Jurors : J. A. Ewen, J. Butterworth, T. C. Skinner. "So far as the Colony is concerned, the dyeing of materials is almost entirely confined to the re-dyeing of Articles of Dress and Upholstery, a most useful arc, for there are many kinds of material that lose their colour before the texture is half worn. G. Hirsch, of Dunedin (Dunedin Dyb Works, George street, opposite Royal George Hotel) exhibits a case of specimens of dyed Wools, Silks, and Feathers, and dyed Sheepskins. The colours on the whole are very fair, and reflect considerable credit on the Exhibitor, to whom the Jurors recommended an Honorary Certificate should be awarded." Honorary Certificate, 639: Gustav Hirsch, Dunedin, for Specimen of Dyeing in Silk, Feathers, &c

Mollbr's Cod Liver On..—" It is with great pleasure that I can bear testimony to the purity of Mr Moller's Cod Liver Oil, which I have used for some three years both in private practice and at the Home for Sick Children, Coatham. In comparing the oil supplied by Mr Moller with that used previously, I cannot but be struck with the few cases in which the stomach refuses to tolerate the oil — a great desideratum in an institution where so many cases of scrofula are admitted. I can confidently recommend Mr Moller's oil to the public as of exceptional purity, and of great dietetic value. Thomas W. T. Locke, Surgeon West Suffolk Militia, Admiralty Surgeon and Agent, Suffolk House, Coatham, April 10th, 1876." Peter Moller is the only real manufacturer bottling his Cod Liver Oil, thus offering to the public the guaranteed article. Head offices at Christiania, Norway; Branch at 521, Oxford street, W.C., London; and Manufactories at Lofoten Islands, Norway. Sold throughout the Colonies by all Chemists' and Druggists ; but have Moller's only. Bjy
