WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council was held in the Council Chambers, Hawksbury, on the Ist. . Present — Mr James , Green (in the chair), and Messrs Orbeil, Duncan, Todd, M'Ken^ie, Donaldson, and Isaac Green. < INSPECTOR OF WORKS* REPORT. A general report from the Inspector of Works was read showing the estimated expenditure on the various works required in the County. On the motion of Mr M'Kenzie, seconded by Mr Todd, it was resolved that the report be received, THE FLOODS. A report from the Inspector of Works was received showing the damage done to the County roads by the late flood, and the estimated total cost of repairing damages in e*ch riding, as follows :— North-East Valley Riding, £26; Blueskindo.'do., £120; Merton do. do., £50; Hawksbury do. do., £5; Palmerston, £30 ; Waihemo, £60 : Dunback. nil. Total, £291. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter from Mr Fraser, solicitor, was further deferred till next meeting. Correspondence was received *" From the Hon. D. Reid informing the Council that instructions had been given to the Chief Surveyor at Dunedin to furnish a map of the County, as requested by the Council. From Messrs Sievwright and Stout regarding the defrayment of expenses of Councillors while on Council business, and stating that the Council is not empowered to vote sums for such a purpose. From the Government requesting to be informed of the Bank at which the County fund is to be kept. From the Colonial Secretary's Office, with a map enclosed showing the boundaries of the Counties in the South Island, received. , RATEABLE VALUES. Returns were received from the Clerks to the various Road Boards within the County showing the rateable values and the rates received up to 31st March, 1876, as follows :—: — Road Board. The Council decided that the following roads be declared County roads :— The main road from Dunedin to the boundary of the Waitaki County, and from Palmerston to the boundary of the Manioioto County ; the Macraes road, commencing at junction of Shag Valley road, and terminating at Taieri Ferry at Hyde ; the road leading from the boundary of the Town Belt, Port Chalmers, to the junction of the main road at the tollbar. — Carried. FUTURE EXPENDITURE. It was moved by Mr M'Kenzie, seconded by Mr Donaldson — " That no money belonging to this Council be expended for the future, except on the roads now passed hs Oounty roadß, until further instructions by this Council. This motion does not refer to expenditure included in No. 1 Report." Carried. VALUATION. Mr Duncan moved, and Mr J. Green seconded — " That in accordance with clause 43 of the Counties Act, 1876, Mr David

Brcnton be appointed valuator to value the outlying districts, for tha purpose of forming a valuation list for the Waikouaiti County Council for the yeara 1877 and 1878. Salary to be at the rate of 20s per day while engaged. "—Carried. Moved by Mr M'Kenzie, seconded by Mr Green—" That the Council pay one-half cost of preparing valuation lists to Road Boards, if lists are 6upplied to this County for their use; and that the Clerk be instructed to communicate with the various Road Boards in the County to that effect." Carried. SURVEY. Mr Donaldson moved, and Mr M'Kenzie seconded — "That the Inspector be authorised to survey and peg off the road through Macraes, commencing at the Stormy Cutting and terminating at the Taieri Ferry."—Carried. FINANCE. Moved by Mr M'Kenzie, seconded by Mr Todd— " That a Finance Committee be appointed, consting of the Chairman and Messrs Duncan and Orbeil, and to report at next meeting."— Carried. NOTICE OF MOTION. The following notice of motion was given by Mr M'Kenzie for next meeting :— " That this Council is of opinion that the Palmerston, Dunback, and Waihemo ridings be formed into a new County, to be called the Waihemo County." The Council then adjourned.
