STRANDING OF THE MATAU.
Wbstpoht, September 25th. The steamer Matau was stranded six miles north of Westport at 1.30 on Saturday morning. An injury to the engine valve nectssitated putting the vessel uiiclor sail during" 'repairs, as she would not lie-to. A heavy gnle was then blowing:, and the wind shifting, drove hnr Bhorewards. Heavy aeas swept her deck, the lumber fouling her atoarinf gear. Tho vessel drifted into tho broakers, and as a last resource she was headed for tho beach. She struck lightly, and lies hijrh and dry at low water. No lives were lost. She will discharge cargo to-morrow. Tho pasiengers arrived here overland. She ia insured in the Standard Company for £7000,
The following are the re-insurances: — National, £1250 ; Victoria, £1000 ; South British, £1000 ; New Zealand, £1000; Globe, £750; Batavia, £500; National of S. A., £500 ; total, £6000. The Matau was ke-vged 150ffc. seaward yestorday, and may bo afloat in a few days. The second mate was disabled by an accident at the capstan ; and a lady cabin passenger wa3 hurt by falling from the deck-house on to the beach.
