THE CHESS MATCH— LAWRENCE v. DUNEDIN.

The third game in this match was finished on Wednesday24th mat/, and, like the Becondone, has resulted in a draw, only one of the three games counting, and that one to the credit of the DuHedin Club. Whilst these j drawn games appear somewhat unaatisfac- | tory as regards the result, we may take it for granted that in a game of 62 moves there must have been some very even and probably skilful play shown, and the Lawrence Club may congratulate themselves again on their having. made so good a stand. This game was adjourned, it will be remembered, at the 27th move. During the interval which transpired, a careful analysis of the game pointed to the probability of its becoming a draw, but to avoid this the Dunedin players made a desperate attempt to queen an advanced i pawn, and, being unsuccessful, lost thereby, their, opponents having at this time a pawn to the good. This state of affairs put the Dunedin players on their mettle, for there was now every prospect of Lawrence winning. By very clever manoeuvring of Bishop, King, and remaining Pawns, however, Black (Dunedin) succeeded in preventing the march of White's advanced Pawn to Queen, and declaring to draw. This was evident at White's 44th move, and at this time (11 p m.) the Dunedin players made a proposal to draw the game. The reply was — " We think we should win ; not inclined to draw." And the game was prolonged for 20 or more moves. 'We consider all three games good ones, and we now append the third. (d) Xt to Xt 5 seems much stronger. (c) R P takes P were better. The move made involves the loss of a pawn. (/) Plausible, but, Blacks King being so confined, the coup de main is not practicable. . (<i) The adjournment of the game took place before this move. White makes the best possible reply. (h) With the extra pawn, it might bo supposed that White should win ; but the players of Dunedin cleverly prove to the contrary, and that the game must be drawn. White ignores the proposal to do so, but eventually acquiesces.
