COMFORT V. FASHION.
The general features of the present season go to prove that with the American people comfort outweighs appearance. Simplicity is at present the fashion with both ladies and gentlemen. Ornaments which a very short time ago were not only fashionable but evideuces of stylo, aro now left severely alone. At the samo time proofs are everywhere to be seen that individual independence of judgemont is asserting itself. There is les3 of the s'avish obedienoe to the behests of foreign modistiea, which do mnoh to make fashions ridiculous, and more confidence shown in American taste and in genuity. Foreign styles are eeldom adopted with the blind deference which they once received. They furnish hints and suggestions which are absorbed into ournattoual modes, and reappear therein a modified form. These facts have been remarkably illustrated in several oases tliia season, — American Paper.
