Two or three breakaways occurred bafore Mr Gaunou told them to go, but snatching A favourable opportunity he despatched the 19 to a good start, the last to get away being; Rory O'More, Goldsbrough, md Reprieve ; King of the West, Myrtle, Poodle,; Th« Arrow The Prophot, and Llama being almost abreast in the front rank ; Storllng, Maid of Avene), Pltg Yattendon, Ladybird, Dagworth, and Westminster being in the oetre, Before going far King of the Weit shot out with a clear lead, and led the field at a good pact as "they rose the hill, Poodle, the Arrow, Llama, Myrtle, The Prophet, and Sterling following Jo the order named. Before reaching the bend Llama" went to tbe front and led into the straight, King ,of the West being second, Poodle third, and The, Arrow fourth ; Burwood, Fitz-Y*ttendon, and Sterling' lying: next, and the favourite running wide of everything on the outside. Passing the Stand Llama was still In possession of the leaiJ, with an advantage of three or four lengths, the Arrow on the inside, having crept up second, Myrtle, Poodle, King of the West, Ladybird. Maid of Avenel, and The Prophet close together in his wake, Sterling holding a splendid position near t>ie rails and Goldsbrough making up his ground, on the left, Reprieve being on his quarter, Horatio nearly last, and Viva whipping in. Rounding the turn King of the Westagain assumed the lead, and Poodle, on tha inside, pulling out, allowed Sterling to go on third at Cutts's, where The Arrow went up to King of the West, and slightly heading him along the bock, they raced together, Sterling going on third, and Llam* fourth, while Poodle began to drop back to Viva, and absolutely refusing to race, he was aoon a long wty in the rear. Before reaching the five-furlong post Aihworth hegxn to move on Goldsbrough, but just as ! ho was rapidly making up his lee-way Llama, sworvlng from distress, ran foul of him, and knocking him out of his stride, he lost about a dozen lengths before Ashworth could set him going again. Meanwhile Myrtle had joined her stable companion, and Sterling and Ladybird got together, while Horatio, who had up to this point occupied a backward position, begun o move towards the leading divition, Maid of Avenel also improving her position. In the ben>i Rory O'More left the body of the field, and overhauling King of tho West and Co. without any perceptible effort, loud cries of " Rory O'More " rent the skies, but his wddlo slipping, he was compelled to retire. King of tho West sweeping' into the straight with about a neck advantage of Sterling, next to whom came Maid of Avenel, who looked exceedingly dangerous when fairly in the home stretch. All this time Goldsbrough, on the extreme outside of about half a doKon beaten horses in a bunch, was gradually overhauling those in front ; Sterling, King of the West, and Maid of Avenel running almost abreast at the distance post, where King of the West shot his bolt, and Bryan' pulling out the whip to Sterling and giving him three smart cuts, he druw away a couple of lengths from the Maid, and Goldsbrough making up hie ground in grand Btyle, got to her girths, but though he answered gamely to Ash worth's final call, and just headed her a stride or two from the post, he could never re»ch Sterling, who won cleverly by nearly two lengths; Horatio, who also came very fast at the finish, being close upon the Maid : King of the West was fifth, fitxYattendon sixth, Myrtle seventh, Burwood eighth, Rory O'Afore ninth, The Prophet tenth, Reprieve eleventh, The Arrow twelfth, Ladybird, Viva, Daifworth, Sunlight, Llama, and Westminster cantering home, and Poodle, who was pulled up at the Derby turn, walking in last. Official time, 3m. StSis but several watches made it 3m. 38s.
