WASTE LANDS BOARD.

The regular weekly meeting of the Waste Jjands Boartd was held on Wednesday. Present : TJas Chief Commissioner (Mr J. T. Thomsw.) in the chair, aud Messrs Reid, Clank, Butterworth, and Strode. TUAPEKA WEST. Mr John M'Lean applied to purchase sections 42, 43, 31, 46, 55, 52, 49, 39, 40, 35, 36, 50, and 32, block 111., Tuapeka West. Mr Haggitt appeared in support of the application. These were some sections set apart under the Deferred Payments Act, and he abandoned the application for them, but applied to purchase the other sections, which were open for sale for years. It was exceedingly important to Mr M'Lean to se- ' cure these sections, which gave connection from one part of his run to the other. If ' Mr M'iLean did not get them his run would be divided into two parts. Mr lleid :' He wants to connect his run w-itiis. his homestead ? Mr- Haggitt : Exactly. ' It appeared that various parties had ap- • plied for land, the circumstances ot which were similar to those of the land applied for, and that their applications had been refused. ' Mr Strode thought that the position of the land should be cleared up. Mr Reid : For the Board to refuse to one and not to the other would not be fair to the public. A discussion then took place on the point raised by Mr Strode. The application was refused. The Commissioner : A great many applications have been refused, and the land is withdrawn from sale till it is again opened for sale. There are many reasons why this should be done. ' Mr Reid : All should know that the land is open for sale before sucH an application as this is granted. CEOOKSTON 'DISTRICT. — APPLICATION FOR PRE- ' EMPTIVE. Mr John M'Kellar applied for sections in the Crookston district, in virtue of his preemptive right over run 163. The area applied for was 640 acres. Theapplication was refused. GLENKENICH. — DECISION OF BOARD ON SAWMILL APPLICATION. Messrs Connell and Moodie, for Messrs J. and W. S. M'Farlane, applied for decision of the Board on their application for sawmill leases in block XIII., Glenkenich. A memorial was received from residents of G-lenkenich in favour of the application. Mr Reid weuld have been disposed to reserve the whole. Mr Connell said there could not he a stronger case for granting the application. The application had been purposely adjourned for the opinion of the district, which was now shown to be favourable. The application was received on usual terms, prior licenses excepted, and to be granted on approval of survey. LICENSE TO OCCUPY. Mr Wm. Duncan applied for a license to occupy section 51, block IV., North Harbour and Blueskin district. This had previously been declined in the interest of the district by the Board, and a memorial was now presented Btating that the granting of the application would not be prejudicial to the , district. The application was granted. To be leased under the 161 st clause, at £5 per year. TUAPEKA EAST. Mr John Michael applied to purchase sec- - tion 42, block XIX.,. Tuapeka East. The Warden reported that there was no objection. It did not appear to be auriferous, and there w.ere valuable improvements upon it. Granted. APPLICATION FOR LEASE. Bathgate and Buchanan, for Mr Chas. Mercer, applied to lease for grazing - 'purposes, section 68, block VI., Dunedin and East Taieri district — a bush reserve. The area was 77 acres. . The Chairman : There is a great deal of bush there, and it is much used by the settlers: We should refuse the application, I think. ■ Mr Reid concurred with the Chairman. Refused. MOKE CREEK COPPER LODE : STEPS TO ARRANGE THE LEASE. A memo was received from the Provincial Solicitor, intimating that were a member of the Board deputed to confer with him, the ■whole matter of the draft lease to Messrs. Howorth and Bractehaw for the Moke Creek copper lode would be satisfactorily arranged • — there being only a few points in dispute. It' wag resolved that Mr Strode be deputed to attend to the matter, and to act as Mr Stout suggested. . ' BUSH RESERVES AT POPOTUNOA. Ranger Hughan reported on the condition of the r bush reserves at Popotunoa, leased to Mr Thomas Pollock Resolved, " That unless the land cleared is , planted and fenced to the satifaction of the Ranger within six months from date, that steps betaken to eject the lessee for nonfulnlment of the terms of lease! The young trees to be separately fenced against cattle." THE RECEIVER OF LAND REVENUE. , Messrs J. E. and G. Atwood forwarded a letter, with copy of one from the District Land Officer, Invercargill, • intimating that the Receiver of Land Revenue would not allow for survey fees paid to account of rent. The application was referred to Government. QUARRY RESERVE, MOERAKI DISTRICT. The Road Engineer reported on the Quarry Reserve, section 59, block VI., Moeraki District. There was no stone or metal in it fit for any purpose. Resolved that it be sold by auction as land of special value, having been so long withheld from sale, and at the upset price of £2 2s per acre. SURVEY FEES. Messrs W. Gregory and James M'lntosh applied for return of survey fees paid on their deferred payment allotments. '- The application was referred to Government. TABLE HILL. — APPLICATION TO PURCHASE SECTIONS. - Messrs Gillies' and Street, for Mr Thoa. Murray, applied to purchase section 25, - block V., Table Hill. Applicant to be referred to the district 'on^cer, and, if he recommended, sale to be i '■advertised for' thirty days, and thus be open J to the public to purchase. ■ - - '

WYNDHAM VILLAGE, KESERVE. Messrs Gillies and Street, for Messrs Fletcher and M'Gillivray, applied for a license under clause 61, to occupy an island in Wyndham Village Reserve. Resolved, that it be leased under 161 st clause at £1 per annum. LAND SALES. Mr Reid proposed that all land that had been submitted to auction and knocked down, but on which the deposit was forfeited, and so purchase not been completed, shall be declared land of special value, and be advertised immediately for thirty days before it becomes open for sale. Agreed to.
