RAVAGES OF WOLVES IN TURKEY.
Excessive cold as a general rule produces torpor, but this rule, like all others, has exceptions, and in Asiatic Turkey, where the cold has of late been intense, the wolves, so far from becoming preternaturally torpid, have become active and energetic to quite a painful degree. Two unfortunate workmen employed in the construction of the railway from Broussa and Mondania were the other day made the objects of " a light supper " by a flock of wolves which descanded into the plain on the night of a severe snowstorm. The workmen were sleeping in a tent pitched at a short distance from Mondania. The next morning, they were only "conspicuous by their absence," the wolves having completely devoured them. A similar fate has befallen a tchaoush employed on the telegraph service at Erzeroum. Having been sent to repair some telegraph poles broken down by the wind, the tchaoush was overtaken by a snowstorm, and is supposed to have lost his way. When discovered, the only remnants left of him were some buttons, some boneß, and a few tools. The wolves in the neighbourhood had made a clean sweep of him, and it is strongly suspected that his horse also formed part of their banquet, for no trace whatever can be found of the unfortunate animal.
