THE ROYAL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY OF OTAGO.

TO THE EDITOR.

Str — Some tAvo Aveeks ago I noticed a letter in your columns, respecting the abovenamed Society, and I have been Avondering a\ hat the Committee Avere about, or whether the .Society were defunct ; and lam afraid your correspondent's latter conjecture is only too correct, as by their rules the annual meeting must be held not later than June ; but 1 cannot get any information respecting tlie annual meeting, and committee meetings cannot be got up. There must be a screAV loose somuAvhere ; and I hoav ask the Committee, are you afraid ? or is the Treasurer so much engaged preparing and assisting the getting up of the petitions of the Temperance League tor the suppression of the liquor traffic, that lie cannot find time to prepare the financial report ? I think that if gentlemen avlio Avouhl lead this and other useful societies in town, but somehoAV only to retard the progress, would just retire to the management of their own affairs, and leave to mure competent men to conduct the allaiis of such societies, it would bo much better for their oavh and the societies' Avelfare.

I have just seen the report of the Christchurch Horticultural Society, and observe that the Committee there have agreed to hold their exhibitions — one on November 9, IS7I, and on December IG, 1871, and the third on a day to be advertised. A strange contrast this to the fine business style in which the "Royal Horticultural Society of Otago is managed.

1 A\ r ould propose that a few of the members hold a meeting to take into consideration the conduct of the present committee, and, if practicable, wind up the Society's affairs, and hand the funds, if any, to the Benevolent Institution <ir some other charitable institution in toAvn.— l am, &.?., Axotrki; Memcitr. Disgusted.
