Markets

Witness Office, Thursday Evening.

The past week has not witnessed much activity in the produce market, and the expectation of improved enquiry, with more firmness in prices, is at present very unlikely of realisation. The advices received latterly have been unfavourable, and the general aspsct of our market discouraging ; the demand being confined to local requirements, and sales generally showing rates not supporting latest quotations. Of wheats, millers have been purchasing very sparingly, and so little inclination is there to large transactions that quotations, though low, can only be considered nominal. — Good grinding samples of wheat are offering at 5s to 5s 3d. During the past few days fair quality oats have been offered more freely, and moderate sized parcels have been quitted at prices varying from 2s to 2s 1 id. The inclination to ship has for the present ceased. There is a maintained demand for good malting barley ; but holders of parcels are looking for rates which manufacturers can scarcely aftord to give ; the value of these descriptions is about 3s Gd to 3s 9d. Feeding barley is reported as having been placed at 2s, and lower. In provisions there is no improvement. Some parcels of cheese on hand a long time since, have been cleared off at low rates ; but for new shipments of Akaroa, not more than 4} to 4^ is offered. Northern butter has scarcely been in request lately, and in consequence very little has reached here ; in a short time provincial will quite supply the market. Hams and bacon have also been in lesser enquiry ; and parcels on hand are offering below former quotations ; like the preceding article, northern shipments are scarcely wanted at present. ,
