The clipper ship William Davie, of Messrs Patrick Henderson and Co. 's line of Clyde packets, readied the Port Chalmers anchorage from Glasgow at S a.m. on Monday, and brought up in a convenient berth off the jetty. Her passengers, of whom she had 1(34, were conveyed to Dunedin by the afternoon trip of the Golden Age. The following report of the passage is extracted from her log : — Left the Tail of the Bank, Greenock, on the afternoon of the 25th of May ; had light winds in the Channel, and took her final departure from off Tory Light on the 2Sth. Fine weather, principally from north and east, then carried her to the Trades, which were lost in lat. 7 "30 N. on the 1 5th of June. Variables and calms then set in till the 21st, when the S.E. Trades were caught. The Equator was crossed on the 25th, in long. 30-10 W., and the Trades carried to lat. 23 S. they were succeeded by northerly and easterly winds until Hearing the meridian of Greenwich, when N.W. breezes set in for a few days. Passed the Cape on the 14th of July. On the 17th S.E. and easterly breezes were then met with and prevailed until the 23rd. Westerly winds were then the order of the day, and increased to some heavy gales after passing Kerguelen Land. Her easting for the most part was run down on the parallel of 45 deg. S., and the Snares rounded without being sighted on the 16th instant ; Chasland's Mistake, the first land seen, was made on the following day ; from thence a succession of light northerly airs and calms detained her to arrival at the
Heads at 3 a.m. yesterday, making the passage from land to land in 80 days, and from anchorage to anchorage in 87 days, and thus keeping up her pnxt'uje as a fast sailer, notwithstanding her detention north of the line and on the coast. The health of all the passengers was good throughout the passage, Dr W. Brown, her surgeon, reporting that no infectious disease had occurred. There was one child, however, died from bronchitis on the 28th of June— -James Carson, aged seven months, the son of a steerage passenger. Another death, by drowning, which cast a gloom over the whole ship, occurred on the 13th of July in lat. 40deg. smin. S., long. 2min. 30deg. W. While the ship was bowling along with afresh westerly breeze, the deceased Thomas Berrill, a steerage passenger, was jerked overboard by coming in contact with the maintopmast staysail sheet, A life buoy was at once thrown him, and a rope hove on his shoulders, but he failed to catch either. The vessel was rounded to, a boat manned, lowered, and sent away in search, and parties sent into the rigging Avith glasses to direct her course. A very heavy sea was running at the time, and after a fruitless search the boat returned to the vessel with the life buoy. Another boat was also got in readiness, should any accident happen to the first one. All that could be done to save life was done, but proved of no avail.
We understand that Messrs 'Cargills and M'Lean have received telegrams via San Francisco stating that the ships (Jity of Dunedin and Christian M'Ausland, from this port, arrived in London on the 30th June and sth July respectively. Also that the ship James Nicol Fleming sailed from the Clyde for Otago on the Sth July,
The ship Gamecock, from Melbourne, with part cargo from the United States, arrived off the Heads on Tuesday evening, and was boarded by a pilot yesterday. In the afternoon she signalled for a tug, and -would probably be towed in by the Wallace, which was shortly afterwards signalled as in sight from Oamaru.
