PETITION OF RESIDENTS OF PALMERSTON AND SHAG VALLEY.
The debate "n Mr M'Kenzie's motion, " That the Petition of residents of Palmerßton, settlers and landowners in Shag Valley district, be referred to the favourable consideration of the Government, with a view to give effect to the prayer of tie same," was resumed by the Hon. Mr M'LEAN, who opposed the motion. Mr H OTCHESON said that the petition did not ask that the line between Waikouaiti and Duoedin should be commenced before the line from Waitaki to Moeraki ; but simply that the connecting link of the main trunk line should be taken in hand before branch lines were constructed. He would therefore support the motion. Dr WEBSTER opposed the motion. Mr MERVYN was surprised at the opposition shown to the motion by some honourable members. He had carefully read the petition, and found it simply asked that the main trunk line should be completed before the branch lines were constructed. He would support the motion. Mr M'KENZIE having replied, the motion was carried on a division, by 1 5 to 9.
