THE TIMARU MATCH.
A challenge having been received by the captain of the Otago team, while in Christchurch, to play 16 of theTimaru Club, advantage was taken of the Maori staying at Timaru all day on Saturday to play the game. The Otago men were driven to the ground in a drag, kindly provided for them by the members of the Club. The game commenced about 11 o'clock. TheTimaru men took the. field first, Perry and Young bowling Hendley and Macfarlan went in firßt. The former was quickly disposed of, being caught off Perry's^first balL " Beade and Macfarlan played very well indeed, Reade scoring 33 and Macfarlan 11— -the only double figures in the first innings. Beade, however, should have been caught at the start, an easy chance being missed. The total of the innings was 67.. An adjournment for lunch now took place, and after justice had been done to the good things provided, and the health of both Clubs having been drunk with the usual honours, the game was resumed — Cook and Goldstone appearing at the wickets first. The former scored 12 before he was caught by Allen off Beade. Mitchell played a very good innings for 14, but was unfortunately run out. JM'DonnelTs slows proved fatal to Strately after scoring 15 by some very free hitting. The game became very close towards the end, two runs being wanted to win, and four wickets to falL The slows, however, were too much for them, and the innings was won by a single run.' It was decided to play the game out, and Hendley and Brown were sent in to the bowling of Perry and Cuff. Brown played a very good Innings for 19, Hendley being again caught out, after making 2 runß only. Allen went in next, and played a very nice innings indeed for 22, being well caught by M'Kellar. M'Donnell and Kettle, having got in together, showed no signs of being separated, and when time was called, had scored 16 and 10 respectively — the total being 74 runs for four wickets. The fielding of the Tnnaru team was very good indeed. Their bowling, also, was Very good, the batting being their weakest point. The Otago men's play waa a decided iniproi'enaent on the Christchurch match, their play all round being very good. The Timaru men had invited their' opponents to an entertainment in the evening, but a strong breeze springing up, and a heavy surf breaking on the beach, it was deemed prudent to go on board at once. Everyone was well pleased with their day's enjoyment. We append the scores :—: — OTAGO. — FIRST INN^tfS
