CRICKET.

THE DUNEDIN CLTJB.

The opening match of the season was played on Saturday by the Dunedin Cricket Clu*>. A «ood many spectators ■were present on the groand, and seemed greatly interested in the game. The day w<iS very fine for cricket, with the exct-p-tion of a veiy strong wind blowing up the bay, which tended to make the bowlbi<,'unsteady. The ground was very lively, J but in a shocking state, beinu in some, places nothing b'lt pa'ches, which were qnit^ louse evidently wanting some water. The match originally announced was not played, a sufficient number of the twentytwo not showing up, A scratch match was played, sides being chosen by Messrs Collinson and Macdonnell. The former having won the ti>ss. decided to take the first innirgs, Murison and Creegh appeared to do battle for their side, Creagh recei\ ing the first over fri»ni l"ul on, and afttr scoring 4, <vas caught in the slips *>y Morrison. Murison was shortly afterwards clean bowled by Hendley, only making 5 runs. Reade and Collinson got together and made a good stand, putting the ' all about aB they pleased, until Reade cut one of Hendley 'b sharp to point into Allen's hands, where it remained, and he had to retire after making a good 16 by

some very neat play. Collinaon's innings was one of the beet we have ever seen him play, his defence being particularly good. He had a great advantage, though, in having a man to run for him (he not having recovered sufficiently from an accident last season to be able to run himself). However, there is no doubt lm play waß really good, and well deserving of the score he made —79, not out. The other players made no stand at all, and their innings terminated for 132, of which, 22 were ex tras. Macdonnell and Allen showed at the wickets for the other side; Reade and Cairns doing the bowling. In attempting to make a third run, Macdonnell was, i unfortunately, run out. Morrison, who followed, shared the same fate. Kettle now joined Allen, and by some very steady play soon, ran up a score of 13, but bad to retire through playing too late for one of Cairns's. Allen was soon afterwards disposed of by Reade, after running up 7" singles. The hopes of the Elevennow rested with Hendley and J. C. Fulton, but the latter w»s bowled off his leg by Cairns, after making only 2. Hendley was then caught at mid-on by Reade, and none of the others making a stand at all, the innings closed for 41 runs, 13 of which were extras, leaving Collinson's side victors by 191 runs. The bowling, considering the i earliness of the season and the strong i wind, was very fair, Cairns not having forgotten, in his spell, the way to drop them in. Hendley and Fulton were in very good form too, but Reade was not bowling as well as vre have seen him do. There is room for great improvement yet, both in the netting and batting. The j Club, we are glad to see, has received an ' addition in the shape of several very good colts, who before long will make, their way ahead. The following are the scores: — ollinson's side.
