ELECTION FOR SOUTH WARD.

The election of a member of the City Council to represent South Ward in the place of Mr H. S. Fish, resigned, on account of having been elected Mayor, terminated onj Wednesday in Mr E. B. Cargill being chosen. This was not an unexpected result, as during the day, and, in fact, ever since the two candidates were nominated, the idea was that Mr Cargill would have the victory. Nevertheless the polling was very close — very much closer than was anticipated. At about half-past four o'clock the Mayor announced that the polling was :—: — Cargill 179 Chaplin 167 Mr Cargill was therefore announced as returned by a majority of twelve votes. Mr Cargill returned his best thanks to all those who had so heartily and energetically voted for him, particularly as no great public question had been at issue. He trusted that he Bhould be able to fulfil the duties of the office to which they had elected him in a manner that would confer satisfaction and benefit to them, and credit to himself.

Mr Chaplin expressed his -warmest thanks for the support he had received, and said that his great pleasure in retiring was kno wing that so good a man had been elected in the place he had striven for. However, he should give the electors another turn next year, if fhey wanted a

representative for their Ward, when probably he might be more successful. This terminated the proceedings
