RAILWAY TO PORT CHALMERS.
A meeting for tho purpose of considering what steps should bo takon for tho construction of tho proposed railway to Port Chalmers, was hold on tho Oth inst. in the library of tho Provincial Council. His Worship tho Mayor (Mr Thomas Birch) presided, and tho following gontlomen woro also prcsont :-— His Honour tho Suporintondcnt, Captain Frasor, and Mossts D. Rolfo (Mayor of Port Chalmers), H. Howorth, M.H.R., W. H. Roynolds, M.H.R., M.P.0., A. J. Burns, M.H.R..M.P.G., H. M'Dormid, M.P.C., J. Sibbaid, M.P.C., G. Turnbull, M.P.0., R. B. Martin, J. Rnttray, W. C. Young, J. KUgmir, T. J. Graham, Clark, J. L. Butterworth, E. M'Glaehnn, 0. Burke, and J. Scoular. His Honour the SupBRmTKKpKNT having brioily enumerated tho chief advantage* that would bo obtained by the construction of tho proposed railway, tho following rootattont wero adopted i — 1. Proposed by Mr M'Dbrmxd, and seconded by Mr Kxlooub-" That, in tht
opinion of this meeting it , is desirable thalt,, immediate", steps' (1 be taken for 'the construction of >",a railway between Dim!- ! edin and Port Chalmers;" I 2. Proposed by Mr BtruNS, and seconded ! by iMr TtrKNßtoi.ii : — "That in the construction of such railway it is expedient to have recourse to the most economic principle and plan, consistent with efficiency, with .which view the meeting is of opinion that the narrow gauge light rail should be adopted, such as has been found, to answer in Queens- ! land, South Australia, British India, I Norway, Sweden, and other countries, i the average cost of which has been found to range from L 3500 to L4OOO a mile. 2. Proposed by Mr Rolfe, and seconded by Mr Howobth : — That in order to give [effect to the foregoing resolutions it is ! expedient that a Joint-stock Company be formed, the capital of which should be L 60,000 in 3000 shares of L2O each, and that the following gentlemen be requested to allow their names to appear as members of the Provisional Committee for the formation of such Company, viz:— His Honour the Superintendent, Captain Fraser, Messrs Birch, Howorth, Martin, M'Dermid, Rattray, Young, Reynolds, Kilgour, Graham, Clark, Butterworth, M'Glashan, Sibbaid, Turnbull, Burns, Rolfe, Burke, and Scoular, with power to add to their number."
4. Proposed by Mr Sibbaid, and seconded by Mr Rolfb :— " That the following gentlemen be appointed a J3ubCommittee for the purpose of preparing a Prospectus, and making all necessary arrangements for the due inauguration of the Company, viz :— The Mayors of Dunedin and Port Chalmers, Captain Fraser, and Messrs Turnbull, Reynolds, Burke, Burns, Martin, and Young."
