Religion in the miclat of us, and the extension of the Redeemer's Kingdom through- | pat the world. i The want of a Religious Periodical indige. nous to our soil has Jong been felt, and the present attempt to supply it has been under- . taken in the humble expectation that it will j receive liberal encouragement from the community at large, and especially from the members of the Presbyterian Ohurds, with. | which the proinotcra are connected. Their highest aim will be to present articlesr in an interesting form, which may commend the truths of religion to the consciences of all • and it is hoped that " The Evangelist * will prove a welcome visitor, especially ia many of the seoluded parts of the counfey. where the sound of the churoh-going bell has not yet been heard, and the face of the Christian Minister is seldom seen. The wants of the young will be specially kept in view, and every number will contain something intended for their reading. Although not an official organ, it will express the views which are generally held by Presbyterians on the various matters which may be discussed ; and it will contain any official documents issued by the Presbyterian Church which may be of general interest. It will give special prominence to the Mia« sionary efforts of the Presbyterian Churcb» on behalf of the Maoris and Chinese in ow land, and the natives of the New Hebrides Islands. At the same time it is not intended to ignore the existence and activities of other denominations of Christians. It is hoped that the pages of " The Evangelist" -will not present anything that may savour ©f seotarian jealousy or bitterness, but rather that considering of one another which may ♦' provoke unto love and to good works." Intelligence regarding Presbyterial and Synodical proceedings, and all Church move ments in Otago and Southland, will be presented, so far as supplied to us ; and there will also be in each number a brief summary of the principal ecclesiastical and missionary occurrences throughout the world, compiled from the latest Home journals. Deficiencies and failings may naturally be expected at the first, but it is hoped that those who diecera them will kindly lend their assistance to prevent them in time to come.
