A. sale of fat cattle took place at Messrs Wright, Robertson, and Co.'s yards, Kaikorai, on Monday, when 35 head, ex Bengal, were exposed. The lot was a mixed one, but brought high prices on account of the scarcity of fat stock. There was a large attendance of the trade. Prices ran from Ll2 for light weights, to LlB for heavy bullocks, being a range of from 403 to 45s pr hundred. There has been a marked scarcity of fat sheep lately, the lots recently placed in the market having been of inferior quality. The severe winter, and want of proper grass paddocks, have had a prejudicial effect on sheep stock, and operated against sheep being kept in prime condition. This is a subject deserving of more attention, as at this season prime mutton is sure of a good price. The leading members in the trade would much rather give a higher price for first-class mutton than pay the rates they have been asked of late for poorer qualities.
