In the Legislative Assembly, to-day,, in consequence of the vote last night on the Northern Territory question, being adverse to the previously announced policy of the Government, the Premier announced that the Ministry had not treated the question as amounting to a want of confidence, and their intention was, therefore, to remain, in office and carry out the views indicated by a majority of the House. With, this view they would bring in a bill, in. accordance- with the resolutions carried yesterday, to provide for increased areas, instead of returning the money to the selectors ; aad, to facilitate this object, tenders would be at once called for, for the survey of the territory. The news brought by returned diggers from the goldfields at Gympie is of so unfavorable a character as likely to stojx any further exodus from here. In the corn market there is no change to report to-day. — Argus. The question of the existing brancfc. | postal service between Adelaide and King I George's Sound has been brought up in. | Parliament, and returns are to be furnished of the annual cost of the service to the colony. I There are fears expressed in somequarters (although they are generallyconsidered groundless) that the Albert Tower of the Town Hall may prove insecure, owing to the slight settlement which has been discovered in the foundations. The new tower of the new Post Office which is being built opposite to the Towa. Hall will be more massive still, and rests upon a similar substratum. The attention of the Government has been called to it in Parliament. Sydney, 17th August. The extraordinary tidal phenomenon which commenced on Saturday morning and extended along the coast northwards, to beyond Newcastle, continued throughout Saturday night and yesterday, only ceasing at night. The wave decreased in. volume until it altogether subsided. The action could have had nothing to do with, tidal influence, as the waves often came, in directly against the ebbing tide, and rose in the rivers against the tidal stream, producing a strong whirlpool. It is sn 1 ? posed to have resulted from volcanic action in the South Seas, at some distance eastward, and that the waves were the rings of the circle occasioned by such a phenomenon, expanding themselves on th« Australian coast. Some disasters to small craft happened at Newcastle. "Vessels were also torn away from their moorings, and the greatest alarm prevailed for some time amongst the shipping generally.
