Three horses entered for this race — two belonging to Matthieu, named Bobby and The Mare, and one to Lloyd, called The Southern Chief. The horses were well matched, and, having an excellent start, they ran close together, and did not part company far in both heats. The rider of Southern Chief had, however, the advantage, and succeeded each time in passing the winning-post first, closely followed by the other two. The race was a capital one, and was, setting the District Race aside, the most pluckily contested one during the day.
Whipped to Death. — We learn from W. J. Organ, that two Chinamen were whipped to death at Squire's Canon, near Dutch Flat, a day or two ago. They were caught by the watchman, who was watching the Bluices, in the act of robbing the flume, and weru beaten to death. It is reported that the poor Chinamen were horribly mutilated, and literally beaten to a jelly. Although they deserved punishment, it would have been much better to have the law take its course than to engage ia such horrible brutality, and we hope those guilty of it will be brought to justice. — Nevada County Transcript, sth February.
