GRAVING DOCK AT PORT CHALMERS.

TENDERS TO BE CALLED FOR. A special meeting of the Otago Dock Trust was held on the 13th instant, at the Athenteum, to consider a letter from the Government. Mr R. B. Martin, the chairman of the Trust, presided ; and the other members present were — Messrs J. Bathgate, A. W. Morris, J. Rattray, T. Hall (Collector of Customs), A. Jackson, and Capt. M'Kinnon. Mr J. M'Gregor was also present on behalf of Mr Balfour,. the engineer. The Chairman said that the letter for the consideration of which the meeting had been convened, was the following : — • Provincial Secretary's Office, Dunedin, 7th November, 1567. Sir — Referring to the interview which the deputation from the Otago Dock Board had with His Honor, the Superintendent, on the sth inst, I have the honor to forward the enclosed extract from the minutes of the Executive Council, from which you will see that the Government is prepared to guarantee the payment of principal and interest on bonds issued by the Board, not exceeding L 50,000. —1 have, &c, J. Vogel, Provincial Secretary. Extract from the Minutes of the Executive Council, sth December, 1867. " Tbe Superintendent having explained the purport ot an. interview between himself and a deputation from, the Otago Dock Board— Resolved, That the Government is prepared at once to guarantee the payment of principal and interest on bonds issued by the Dock Board, not exceeding L 50,000, in terms, and. as empowered by the Otago Dock Trust Ordinance, 1865; and* further, that the Government is prepared to render every assistance in its power towards enabling the Board to fulfil the object for which it was instituted. That a copy ol this Minute be forwarded to the Dock Board." A true extract. Alexander Willis, Clerk to the Executive Council. He (the Chairman) thought there could be no doubt whatever, that it was now the duty of the Trust to take action, by calling for tenders. Mr M'Gregor was present to give explanations as to the specification, form of tender, &c. It was unanimously resolved that tenders should be called for; that the advertisement should be published in Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland, Melbourne, and Sydney; and that the j time for receiving tenders should be until March 25th, 1868. In reply to a question, the Chairman read the 12th clause of the Ordinance, authorising the Superintendent to guarantee principal not exceeding L 50,000, and interest not exceeding ei&ht per cent ; and the 13th clause, making the repayment and payment a charge upon " all the revenues of the said Province which are now, or hereafter shall be, subject to be appropriated by the Superintendent and Provincial Council thereof. Some explanations, were given as to the I form of advertisement to be inserted, and as to provisions in the conditions of tender. It was resolved that a letter Bhoiild be addressed to the Mayor of Port Chalmers, with respect to the use, by the contractors, of the quarry now being let by the Corporation. The Board was adjourned 1 .
