DUNSTAN.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRBBPONDBHT.) Ist April. i Tbe election for the Goldfields did nofc create so much excitement in' thi9 district N as was expected. This ; apparently, arose from the fact, of the principal interest in. electioneering matters being expended upon, the election for Superintendent,! and the apathy which is felt in a matter when it » no longer a novelty.
The election for the district of Manuherikia promises to be well contested, there being no less than five candidates in the field for the one seat. They are Messrs. C. O'Neil, D. F. Main, D. H. Mervvn, H. D. Maddock, and Win. Lamont Baileyv ' Afc present Mr. Mervyn is the favorite? next follow Messrs. Main and Maddock.. The Manuberikia district is a difficult' one to canvass, the voters being at its extreme ends, and at long distances from each other. Roxburgh will be the chief polling place, as faras'tlienutnber of "* votes polled is concerned, and it is there that the good offices of electors must foe: successfully wooed.
In the Cromwell district mining matters are considerably improving, and as soon as. there is a better supply of water for the races, the activity will be still jftrriher increased. Tne TownCoucicilaremakinggreat^ improvements in the main street 'through the town. The Corporation Engineer, Mr Burley, has taken thepermanent levels in Melmare street, and the, roadway and footpaths are being formed accordingly. In some few instances individuals will be put to expense in lowering their buildings; still, the interests of the .whole must be considered before that of the few. When everything is properly arranged, -Cromwell ' will b6 an extremely handsome Httle.townstip.
At the Nevis mining matters are ex- t ceedingly brisk, and the population is' increasing. The want of a more ftequenfe visit ot the Warden is much, felt., "The subject was made the cause of an excited public meeting on Saturday, last, and much agitation was expressed' on account of alleged neglect on_ the part of the Warden. A committee was formed, and a letter^ of remonstrance " was ordered to be written and sent to the leading Provincial newspapers. The Ibcal journal has taken the matter up on the part of the miners, and doubtless some good result will follow.
At Alexandra mining matters are also improving, and padilorfving operations will soon commence at the Frenchman's Beach. An increased supply ol water is raucbL needed, and the first fall of anow oa the mountains i 3 eagerly looked for. Such a dry season has" never been known before, and to this cause may be attributed the smallness of the Escort returns. A municipality is talked about for Alexandra, and a meeting will be shortly held to procure that necessary desideratum.
