London Wool Report closed on 23rd June.
Total bales catalogued, 157,602. Failures and tightness of money caused a decline of from 2d to 2id in all desertions, but best Port Philip ruled from Ud to 4d lower, owing to the low prices of Silesian fleeces.
Good and middling Sydney reduced in price.
Had it not been for the operations of French buyers, who ruled the market, wool would have fallen considerably from opening prices, as English buyers had anticipated a greater decline, and operated cautiously. No further decline was expected at the August sales.
The exports to Adelaide and New Zealand for the month show a marked decrease.
The total liabilities of the Agra and Masterman's Bank are stated £7,906,892 and the assets, £9,058,497.
The Board of Trade returns for the month present favorable results. Foreign exchanges are unsettled, owing to the Continental war. Holland and Austria are especially affected by this, but public feeling in England on monetary matters is improving. The following is a recapitulation of the principal failures that have occurred aince the 10th of May:— Overend, Gurney and Co ; Peto and Betts ; W. Etchorn and Sons; Agra and Masterman's Bank; James Barnes and Co ; T. M. The European Congress had been abandoned.
Prussia and Italy are at deadly war with Austria.
Prussia at once entered Schleswig-Hol-stein, Hanover, Hesse-Cassel, and Austrian Silesia.
A great battle has been fought between the Austrians and Italians. The latter were repulsed with heavy loss, but the Italian Volunteers attacked the Austrians successfully.
The English Ministry were defeated on their Reform Bill, -which is withdrawn till next session.
Canada has been invaded by the Fenians, who were repulsed and dispersed. There have been military revolts in Spain. 1000 lives were sacrified. Loitoon, June 26. The Australian April mail reached London June 10th and 16th.
The defeat of the Ministry was owinc: to Lord Dunkellin, who moved that in regard to the Borough franchise the rating and not the rental should be the bams of the reform ; tha effect of the motion being to circumscribe the extension meditated by the Government. Tbo conflict was short, but fierce and fa al. The division took place on the 18th June, and resulted in a majority of eleven against the Governmen\ Mr Gladstone then rose, and, with s r c'>t dignity, announced the intention of Ministers to resign. He asked for an adjournment for a week, on purpose to communicate with the Queen, who was then at Balmoral. Messengers were immediately despatched to her fit this crisis, and she at once returned to Windsor, but declined for a time to accept the resignation of the Ministry, besides expressing her objection to a dissolution. This met public approbation.
The result of the panic is still partially felt. Business is checked, and money difficult to obtain.
The failure of the Agra and Maeterm3n'a Bank was caused principally by the operations of dubious telegrams. The result of the Jamaica Enquiry is the removal of Governor Eyre, and the appointment of Sir John Peter Grant in his place.
The public opinion was that Governor Eyre should have been prosecuted for the murder of Gordon.
The seamen are on the strike in England for a large increase of wages. Nbw Yobk, 16th June.
The House of Representatives has concurred in the Senate's amendments to the resolution for re-construction. It has now passed both Houses, but requires ratification by the States Legislature.
General Santa Anna has issued a proclamation at New York, offering his services to the E> publican cause in Mexico, and exhorting the Mexicans to unite and expel the usurpers.
The President has vetoed the Bill granting important privileges to Motana Minnesota.
The departure of Austrian troops for Mexico is suspended.
