INTERCOLONIAL RIFLE MATCH.
Oa Wednesday last, at the Government Butts, Kaikorai, there was fired a match, intended to be a simultaneous one, between ten members of the Dunedin Volunteer Artillery, and an equal number of the St. Kilda Artillery Company, Melbourne, commanded by Captani Sargood, whose Company Las the reputation of having in its ranks some of the best shots in the capital of Victoria. Captain Sargood, we believe, on one occasion fired in the intercolonial match between Melbourne^ and Sydney, and that fact speaks sufficiently for his prowess. The Dunedin Ar'il'ery gave the challenp-e, which was accepted at once by the St. Kilda— a wish being expressed, in noticing the acceptance, that this might be the commencement of a series of matches between the companies. To the Dunedin Artillery the credit is due of being the first Company in New Zealand to institute these simultaneous matches ; and the Company have already fired three matches with two different companies ot Canterbury Rifles, in each of which they have been successful. Captain and Adjutant Atkinson, on behalf of the Dunedin team, superintended the firing. The ranges, target?, and conditions were the same as those used in the matches with the Canterbury Rifles, and also in the competition for the late Government District Prizes, viz :— Distances, 300, 400, and 500 yards; Hythe second class targets at all ranges, Icing 6ft. by 6ft., with 2ft. square bull's eye, and 4ft. centre; rifles of Government issue, and Government ammunition ; five rounds at each range ; any position, without artificial rest. Although deprived by absence of the services of two of their best shots, the Dune din men have made the highest average yet made by any Company in New Zealand, having made an average of 42 and one-tenth. Some of the lest shots most unnacountably stand at the bottom of the listSergeant Devore, with 50 points, is again the highest scorer on the Dunedin side. The following are the scores :—
