DUNEDIN RACES.
SECOND DAY.
Early on Friday, the 9th instant, there seemed every prospect of a wet day, which may account for the rather small attendance on the Couree. The weather cleared about twelve, and the afternoon was gloriously fine. The Election also, no doubt, prevented many from attending. The races commenced about a quarter to one. Subjoined is a full description of the racing: — Town Plate of 100 sots. Distance. 3 miles; weight ior sge. Winner of Dunedin Handicap to cany slb extra. Mr R. M'Laren's b g Schoolboy. 4 yrs 93t lib (Cundy) 1 Mr C. E. Bird's b g Hatter, aged, lOst lib (Ryan) 2 Mr C. Hoyt's Rob Roy— scratched 0 Betting— 2 and 3 to I on Schoolboy. For this race, the fir6t of the day, only two horses started, Eob Roy "being lame. This was the first three-mile race of the meeting. Schoolboy led all the way. At the second turn, Hatter made a good show, and his friendß began to think he would pull through. However, on the " cane" being applied, Schoolboy kept the lead he had already taken, and ■won by tyro lengths. Time — fira. 20s. Handicap Tkotting Race of 50 soys. Hoyt). 50 yds ." 3 Mr G. Patterson's b m Lady Syntax, 4 yrs (T. Jiustie), 100 yds .....' .' 0 Betting — 3 to 2 and even on Major, 2 to 1 against Ranger, This was a very interesting race, not only for the goodness of the trotting, but from the peculiarity of cne of the three horses being driven in a " sulky," which, perhaps, auay account for his not winning. The iace lay between Major and Ranger. Both rider and driver did their best, and had not the Major broke, it is doubtful if the race would have terminated as it did, in Ranger's favor. George Smith rode the winner admirably, and Mills's driving was considered very good. Time — 16m. 15s. District Handicap of 100 boys, with sweepstakes of 7 boys each added ; distance, 2 miles. Mr W. H. Taggart's b m Virginia, aged, 9sfc lOib (Ruy) 1 Mr J. G. Glassford's b g Ramblir, aged, 9st 7h> (Green) 2 Mr J. Sportsman went round far in advance, and was cantering in, when Tom, who had crept up, made a rush and won the heat. 2nd and 3rd Heats — Sportsman won easily. Selling Race of 50 soys.
