UPPER MANUHERIKIA.
{VB.OII TUH DAILY T!M!:d CDKEKSP "iDENI.) Du>'stan Creek, 28th July. On Tuesday la"t we were visited with a severe snow ttorm. It commenced about 10 o'clock -a.m., and lasted till near midday oa Wednesday. Although it made everything da'np and mis* rable, the fall of snow was welcomed by all parties, a=! it increased the water supply, permitting many parties wl o have been long idle to recommence work. As a matter of course snow-balling became n favorite pastime ; the unwary often coming in for an unlucky L lov, not that the missile might; he purposely dneetcd towards him, but his crossing its path while in a state of transit caused him to become an involuntary target. On Monday evening an Auction Bazaar, upon the principle of a " New way to pay old Dei.\3," uag held at the Criterion Hotel. The gifts were very numerous, and comprised articles of every description, from a lady's crinoline to a sucking pig. The lar^e room of the hotel was tastefully decorakd, and when lit up, it presented a< very pleasing appearance. The goods were ra \<j^d on tables, and elisplaj'ed to the bast advantage ; the attendance was a very large oue ; the business of the evening commenced with an introductory speech by Dr. Donovan, followed by Mr Harvey, the officer in charge of the district, who introduced Mr Cope, the Secretary to the Hospital, to the assemblage, who being on a visit to Dunstan Creek, availed himself of the opportunity to hold the Bazaar as a means of raising funds on behalf of the Institution. Mr Cope briefly remarked upon the advantage the Hospital had been to the mining community, and called upon those present to contribute liberally to wards its support. The sale then commenced, and Mr Lazarus, who occupied the rostrum, was kept busily employed till a very late hour. As a matter of course there was much amusement, especially when some article of feminine apparel became the subject of fierce competition among a parcel of benedict diggers. Mr Jones, the proprietor of the hotel, gave the room free. The pianist, Professor " Possum," also gave his valuable services, and at intervals enlivened the proceedings with appropriate music. The sale realised. the large sum of L 62 5s 6d.
