The Charge of Concealment or Childbirth. — When this adjourned case was called on, a medical certificate was put in to show that the prisoners Margaret M'Pherson and Mary Scott were unable to attend the Court. William M'Kellar, surgeon of the ship St. Vincent, was called. He stated that he knew Margaret M'Pherson, and had occasion to attend her during the voyage from Glasgow to Dunedin. In the month of December, shortly after leaving port, his attention was called to Margaret M'Pherson by her excessive vomiting. He was not aware of her state, although he had his suspicions; but she
never informed him that she was pregnant. This was all the evidence in the case. Later in the day the Magistrate proceeded to the jail, and formally committed the prisoners to take their trial before the next Criminal Sittings of the Supreme Court.
