PLEURO-PNEUMONIA IN SOUTHLAND.
(From the Southland Daily Neios.)
The following official report by Dr. Murray has been placed atour disposal. The article on the assumed existence of pleuro-pneumonia in Southland, in our leading columns, was in type yesterday, and held over from pressure of matter, and must not be understood, therefore, to have any reference to Dr. Murray's letter. We have received several valuable communications on the subject, the publication of which we regret to be obliged to defer. Provincial Hospital, June 24th, 1864. Sir— l have the houor to forward you
the following particulars of the two specimens of pleuro-pneumonia lnng sent for examination to the hospital. Specimen No. 1, (in tin case).— Physical appearance and characteristics:— White on surface ; not lobulated ; pleura-opaque, and thickened with a thin layer of lymph on the surface, which was easily separable. Specific gravity :—l-004; soft, but not elastic to the touch. By section : — The lung was carnified, (cellular structure being completely obliterated) ; bronchial tubes thickened in coats ; enlarged and contracted in places ; and almost completely blocked up by a gelatinous looking substance ; a yellowish serum occupied the tubes where this was absent. I consider this to have been a rather chronic case of pleuro-pneumonia in its second stage. Specimen No. 2 (sent yesterday.) — Physical appearance and characteristics :—: — Dull red on surface 5 not lobulated ; pleura opaque and thickened with patches of lymph on surface, not readily separable. Specific gravity :— 1008; solid and elastic to the touch. Section: — Lung pepatized (cellular tissue completely obliterated) ; bronchial tubes completely blocked up by lymph and hard to the touch. I consider this to have been an acute case of pleuropneumonia in its second state. I am, &c, Jasiks P. Muehay. Surgeon to Hospital. W. H. Aylmer, Esq., Clerk to Superintendent.
