TOKOMAIRIRO.

(FROM THK D \ILY TIMES CORRESPONDENT.)The 'adjourned public meeting regarding the establishment of a public market in this district, was held in the Schoolhouse on Saturday ast. The chair was occupied by Mr A. Jones. The interim committee appointed at the previous meeting, reported that they had inspected several sites for the proposed building, and made inquiries as to the terms on which they could be obtained. Application had also been made to the Government to-. ascertain whether they would render any assistance to the scheme. As jet no reply had been received ; but after mature consideration, the committee were unanimously of opinion that the only meanswhereby the undertaking could be carried' to a successful issue was, by the formation, of a Joint Stock Company. Some discussion ensued as to the possibility of obtaining the grant as a site for the cattle market from the Government out of the Police Reserve, and the necessity for the cattle yards being situated at some distance from the township. Mr Dyer moved a resolution to the effect — " That a Joint Stock Company should be formed,, consisting of one hundred shares, at L 5 each." Mr E. Martin seconded the resolution, which was unanimously agreed to. On the motion of Mr E. T, Gillon, an interim committee, consisting of Messrs Jones, Smith, Dewe, Dyer, Martin, Fleming, Faulkner, Grey, Duff, R. Murray, and Gillon, was appointed for the purpose of enrolling shareholders, and making other necessary arrangements. Mr Jones was appointed convener, and it was resolved to report to a meeting of shareas soon as fifty shares were taken up. About twenty shares were at once applied for, and I do not think that any difficulty will be experienced in disposing of the entire number. The want of a market has been much felt here, and its establishment will be of great benefit to the agricultural community. A meeting of the District Committee onthe New Zealand" Exhibition, 1865, was held last week, but nothing very imporportant was done. A list oi articles which, the district was capable of producing ibr exhibition was drawn up, and the variousmembers of the committee resolved to visit parties likely to prove exhibitors. It was also resolved to write to the Local Committee, and to strongly urge the claims o( the Country Committees to a portion of any funds which may be voted for ejenerat purposes. The Committee then adjourned for a week. The School Committee of this di?tric£. have imposed a vote of sixpence in the pound for the current year. As might be expected, this announcement has been productive of great dissatisfaction, and it is not unlikely that a public meeting will be held for the purpose of protesting against the assessment. The weather in this district was dreadful last week, and we had several severe hail- ' storms ; and on Wednesday and Thursday a perfect gale, which unroofed several houses. Yesterday being the Queen's birthday, was pretty generally observed as a holiday, but with the exception of a little im-. promptu horse-racing, there was not any public demonstration. . t '
