DUNEDIN TRADE REPORT.

Otago Witness Office, March 24, 1864. Business generally has worn every symptom of improvement since our last report, and future prospects are more encouraging. Accounts front the gold fields are decidedly better than they have been for some time, and the demand from the interior increases rapidly as stocks become reduced and winter approaches. The town trade has scarcely corresponded in activity with that of the country, but no immediate change can be expected, as business in town is largely overdone. The excitement in the flour market is now nearly over, and it is expected that prices will recede as rapidly as they advanced. Before the arrival of the Malay, small lots could not be purchased for less than £35. Parcels were brought in from Waikouaiti, the Taieri, and in fact from all quarters, and sold at a profit. The best branda can now be had for £30, but there is no inclination to buy, and little or nothing doing. Every steamer will now bring supplies. We hear from Christchurch that all the available flour in that place and Lyttelton has changed hands for the Dunedin market at £25 per ton. One lot, purchased in Otago some months ago, was resold for this placa at a large profit. The principal bakers in Dunedin have now enough to keep them going until further supplies arrive. The trade in soft goods, and in boots and shoes, which has been languishing for some time, has slightly improved. In provisions and general imports there is no special change. Sugars remain firm . In teas there is little doing. Low to medium qualities, ia chests, £7 to £8 10s, duty paid ; half chests, £3 to £3 16s. Martell's pale brandy, in bulk, we quote 10s 6d ; Hennessy's, 10s 9d to 11s; Otard's, w. In case, Martell's. 28s; Hennessy's, 28s 6d. Whisky, bulk : Kirkliston, 3s 3d; Campbeiton, 4s.
