Medicines: Their Impcbitiks and Advlterations. — The " Lancet" has just commenced the publication of a new- series of investigations, relative to the impnrities and adulterations of medicines, giving, ss it did in the case of its inquiries respecting the adulteration of food, the names of the vendors of whom the analysed samples were obtained. The report in the " Lancet" of this week is on Sweet Spirit of Nitre— a remedy, perhaps, more extensively employed than any other. It shows, first, that this article, when not adulterated, is usually ia a very impure state, but that by far the greater camber of the ssmples were adulterated. Some of them wens diluted with water, which formed in some cases s fourth, in others a third, and in oneinstance even half, the so-caUed spirit ; while others, contrary to the wishes and instructions of the College of Physicians, were prepared with methylated spirit, costing about 33 6d per gallon, in place of spirits of wine at 22s per gallon.
The "Tiraea" correspondent in America bats — •" It would be worth while for the English press to keep a speelal correspondent here simply for the purpose of sending home daily specimens of American bragging. Here are " A few facts, moderately stated, 11 as an article in yesterday's number ot the paper most universally read in th« Union Is entitled. " Our discoveries and inventions in the art of war are changing the military and naval systems of all Europe. We have cannon against which fortifications are as fragile as paper, and ships which are'almost impregnable to the heaviest shot. PulasVi 'and Sumter are battered dawn off hand, and our Monitors shed shot as a duck sheds rain. No European navy is of any account in .comparison with out own, and no European fortress is secure if we choose to attack it. To take Gibraltar would be child's play to the army and navy which have taken Vicksburg, Our first move in a war with England would be to anchor a Dunderberg opposite to London, and proclaim our ultimatum of Greek fire or unconditional surrender. We have won for ourselves the title of the Heroules of nations. We are cleaning our own Augean, stables at present, but we shall be ready for those of the other continent when onr services are required. Perhaps France and England will wait to be whipped by and by. If bo, we will accomodate them, and have no objection to throw a few fosy Powers like Spain into the bargain.*
