CHINA AND INDIA.
Hong Kong, September 21. Burgevine remains quiet, but is receiving fresh accessions of foreigners. Major Gordon and troops are besieging Soo-Chow. Captain Sherard Osborne arrived with the heavy squadron. Active operations against the rebels are daily looked for. In Japan, Prince Satsuma9' reply to Admiral Kuper was unsatisfactory. After much negotiating, the Japanese Prince finally opened his batteries on the British squadron. An engagement ensued, in the midst ot a typhoon. Oar ships were damaged considerably by the fire, and the list of casualties is very j heavy. The Ja[ anese batteries were partly disabled, and three of their steamers destroyed. A great part of the town of Kagasima and the palace were burned. The English fleet then sailed for Yokohama, to repair damages. There is nothing of interest from Pekin or the northern ports. •■ ' '»
