WAIKOUAITI.
(from tub daily, times correspondent. October 12, 1863. Since my last we have been favored with a visit from His Honor the Superintendent. He haa been enqairing into all local matters with a view of becoming more acquainted with their demands. I understand he has formed a most favorable opinion of the District, and was much surprised to observe the progress iv its prosperity and advancement since he waß last among us. He vuited the landing place on the beach to judge of the practicability of erecting a jetty, and we are glad to hear he considered it a most necessary work, but he believed the L2OOO already voted for the purpose insufficient for its completion — a rather heavy sea rolling in at the time he was there, perhaps, tended to his forming that idea. We trust the object of a few hundred pounds will not cause the work to be abandoned. His Honor could scarcely come to an accurate , conclusion by once inspecting the projected I place of its erection, and the surf at that one place being very boisterous. Ido not wish to convey the idea he waa at all opposed to the work, for on the contrary, he was inclined to be a promoter rather than otherwise. The Jatc grievance about a road to the bush was also a subject of notice. He clearly perceived the position in which parties who had purchased Crown lands were placed by their having no outlet but through Mr Jones' property. lam informed he ha 3 arranged with Mr Jones for a line of road, so that the public can now obtain their supplies of timber and provisions. His Honor signified his intention of placing the sum of pl5O on the Estimates for the fencing and improvement of the road, and should tho amount not be sufficient for its proper formation, the residents would have to contribute the required sum. It beiug the custom in all districts that the inhabitants should assist in making bye roads, the call upon them here cannot be objected to. The work should be commenced immediately while the fine weather lasts, and not be deferred as is usual in such cases, till the roads are found impassable before the idea of metalling them is conceived. Some of the townspeople j~ have anticipated that the Northern Trunk Toad would pass through the town, but his Honor has stated that the idea of its doing so has been given up, the present line having been proceeded with too far to divert it rom the course already taken. It will now join the old North Road near Jones' steam flour mill, and thence take its usual route. In a short time we are led to believe Cobb and Co.'s enterprising firm intend running a coach on this line from Dunedin to Oamaru. Had the residents been aware of the Superintendent's visit, I am sure he would ha-e been received with greater eclat, hut his arriving late on Friday evening and returning early this morning, prevented any public demonstration. The next time we a' c favored with his presence, we hope no obstacle will arise to prevent our receiving him with due respect. His Honor attended divine service on Sunday afternoon, at the Episcopal Church, when our newly appointed clergyman, the Rev. Mr Dasent, officiated for the first time since hie arrival in Waikouaiti.
In the absence of a bank it would be a great convenience to the commercial community if our post office was made a money order office. In the present times of " sticking up" parties are naturally averse to forward money, as they are now obliged to do, through private hands — the only means afforded for its transmission. It was rumoured the other day, a bank was to be established we only hope the report may be well founded.
