FAREWELL DINNER TO MR. D. W.
On Friday, the 3rd current, a diunev was civen at Cnunonds Hotel, East Taieri, to D. W. Ou^hton Esq., prior to 1m departure for the home country. ' About fifty people sat down in the comfortable dimng-room of the East Taieri Hotel, and after doing ample justice to a substantial dinner, the Chairman (Mr Cornelius Todd) rose and gave the health of her Majesty the Queen ; after which, followed that of the .Royal Family. «P c yke-Chairman (Mr Wm. Shand) then gave "The Army aud Navy," which was followed by Mr T 'm^ G3^ insins " T!ie Red > Wllit e, «nd Blue?" The Chairman then gave '< The Governor, Sir George Grey," which mv heartily responded to. 'Ihe Superintendent and Provincial Council" was then given by the Vice-Chairman, and nolied to in au^ appropriate manner by Mr Andiew Todd, M T ff 9? ail>in « l n <>w rose to propose the health, of Mr Oughton, In doing so, ho remarked that it was upward* of ten. years since MrOughtou had settled
on the Taieri Plain, which was then a perfect wilderness. He referred to the indefatigable mmuer in which Mr Outfou Jial not only grappled with his private affaus aa a sucee-sfal '"coijiiist. but had kke.i an adivj pu-t in ail the Io;;tl busi-HH.-s f>f tho dibtricfc, and the popu'arity which Mr Oiifrhton had always enjoyed on account of his affable and crcnerous disposition. After some further remarks highly complimentary to Mr Oughton, and which were loudly applauded by the company, Mr Ou<?hton's health -iva3 drunk with all tho honors. > Mr Oi-ihtin, in repty, said that he thanked his friemk ior t\\h nnrk of their go»d will • that he had passpd the happi'st period of his life in the East Taieii; that it affn-ded him the gm-.tesf pleasure to see so uinny well-known faces around him that evening ; and that he hoped, at no very distant any, to retu -n to th'j Taievi, which he ahviys would consider as iiis home; and, after a short speech, sat down amidot qruat applause.
A jjreat variety of toasts were Rub»rquently drunk and ably responded to. Amount others, .Mr Wm. Todd proposed " Snecoss to the digorin^," which %va3 replied to by Mr Win. Christie. ?.fr Oughton, in a fhtteiuur speech, a. we " 'i'he ladies.'' and Mr Jas. Shand, on behalf of the ladie-s, returned thanks in a very handsome manner.
The evening was enlivened by a number of evellent songs, sung by Mr tiro. Prti>'i., Mr K/jsifc Chris'ie, and others At almt 'v -n-.st 11 o'-bek the company tang " Auld r/m,r /m , g >n % a , K [ | )roko atter a very pleasant and lively evening.
