DRAIN-TILES

[From the Melbourne Vc o man.~\

The fact cannot be too well known that the i price of tubular drain-tiles in this colony is £7 j per 1,000, whereas in England the price is only 12s. for the same number. In England, even before the invention of tile-macliines,the price was never higher than £5. Let us see what draining will cost, if we have to pay such an outrageous price for tiles. We can easily see how many tiles are required for an imperial acre by a reference to a t ble which we give below. If drain tiles coul! he obtained at a moderate price, we have no douljt that they would he soon in request, chiefly for gardens and orchards ; but in no case is their u*e more urgently required than around private dwellings. Let us hope that some enterprising individual will introduce a machine for the manufacture of drain tiles. We believe there are already some kinds of machineb here, but they must be of a primitive character, or else the manufacturer must have enormous profits. Wo cannot otherwise account for the extraordinary difference between the English and Colonial prices :—: — Table showing the number of pipes, from 12in. to iGin. long, required to drain one imperial acrff of laud at 12ft. to 55ft. between the daains :—
