RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Wednesday, Oct. 16. William Culbert, master of the ship " Vistula, ' was found guilty of a breach of sec. 16 of the Passengers' Act, in having s. false passenger list. ' Fined £42 and costs. The fine v/as apportioned to the profit derived from fares not on the list. Thomas Crans, carter, was charged with stealing a bag of potatoes ofF the lighter " Bon Accord," near the jetty. Case dismissed. Samuel Wills was fined 20s. or 48 hours imprisonment for dru*kenness. Thursday, Oct. 17. Jeremiah Murphy and Mary Ann Robinson were convicted of using obscene and foul language, and fined 405., 0r 14 clays' imprisonment. A. Moore, J. Baird, J. Kilgour, and M. A. Robinson, were severally convicted of drunkenness, and fined. J. Murphy, J. M'Kenrick, and IF. Stokes, were charged with having escaped from Tabinania , before a term of transportation to which they had been sentenced had expired. The evidence, however, was not sufficiently strong to warrant their detention, and they were discharged. Friday, Oct. 18. I Slt Grog Selling. — Thomas C. Bowern, \ keeper of the "flit or Miss " Lodging House, and W. Lang, keeper of the Otago Refreshment Rooms, "were each fined £50 and costs for breaches of the Licensing Ordinance. W. H. Leslie, master of the ship '' Lucknow," ' was fined, under the 29th sec. of the Passenger Act, .£lO and costs. W. G. Junior, master of the ship " Daniel Watson," was fined a similar sum and costs for a like ofience. William Devoy, a person living in a van in Stafford-street, was charged with receiving property, knowing it to have been stolen. Remanded till October 23. This case refers to one against Bannon and Smith, for stealing Mr. Banks' goods ! on -the night of Sunday week. ! Robert Stewart, Henry Smith, and James Lechie, I were convicted of drunkenne&s, and each fined 20s. or 48 hours' imprisonment. Satuhday, Oct. 19. James Watson was charged by Hugh Tierney "with having frauduently transferred a passage ticket by the ship " Ceras "to Melbourne. The ticket had been purchased by Tierney, and subsequently lost. Oil applying for a duplicate, it vr&B found that it had been transferred in the name of James Watson. Prisoner stated that he ' bought the ticket of a man in the street, who said he had changed his mind and would not go back. Prisoner remanded on his own recognizance to try and find the person. Mokday, Oct. 21. John Clark, living in a tent in Stafford-street, wis*eharged with an accessory to the robbery committed on the property of Mr- Banks and others. Upon the request of the Commissioner of Police, prisoner was discharged, and afterwards gave valuable evidence tending to criminate the prisoners Bannon and Smith with having committed the robbery, who were sent fbr trial at the Supreme Court. Jas. Joy, J. Steers, J. Callagher, J. Millar, and P. Cummins, charged with being concerned in the robbery and " sticking up " business at the West Taieri, last Aveek, were discharged, the j evidence not being sufficiently strong to prove any identity. The case of Jones and Geeghan, for the robbery of Crowhurst's, was again brought up and occupied a considerable time, the examinations | being very lengthy, and was further remanded till Thursday. We will give a digest of the whole evidence in our next Several cases of minor importance were disposed of, and the Court adjourned at a late hour. ■ Tuesday, Oct. 22. The prisoners Kilmariin, Higgins, Connolly, and Sutton, some time since charged with having escaped from Tasmania before the term of transportation to which they hud been sentenced had expired, were discharged for want of sufficient evidence. • • Several cases of cattle trespass, obstructing thoroughfares, and small debt cases were dis- - posed of.
