RECLAMATION OF THE HARBOUR.
We hear that the Government, having received a grant of a considerable portion of the harbour below high- water mark, and just in front of the town, intend, early in November, after the meeting of the Provincial Council, to take measures for the prosecution of the work. It is designed to excavate a portion of the harbour for docks, and deepen the channel, using the material obtained for the purposes of reclamation. It is not improbable that a smaller portion of the harbour than that which would be included in the scheme above noted, will be brought under reclamation at once, by throwing out embankments or erecting jetties, so as to distribute and relieve the commerce of the town, and by leasing a portion of the adjacent harbour while the other is under reclamation. It would be well that engineers and contractors should have their attention directed to this subject, for it is probable that the Government will not entertain, under existing circumstances, their former design of obtaining a steam dredge and a steam ram for pile-driving, and performing the work under official supervision, but leave it to be undertaken by private enterprise under contract. There is abundance of manuka for piles, and an equal abundance of stone, on the outskirts of the town, for embankments.'
