EDUCATION BOARD.

A meeting of this Board was held at the Government office, Dunedin, on the 6th inst., to prepare Estimates for the Educational Report for the Bix months from 31st March last. Present — His Honor the Superintendent, in the chair, and Messrs. Cutten and Howorth, ex officio members ; Rev. Mr. Will as a continued member of the Board, and Mr. John M'Glashan, secretary. The following representatives to the Board from District School Committees were reported: — Dunedin — Messrs. H. F. Hardy and John Duncan ; Port Chalmers — Messrs. Thos. Taylor and Wm. Thomson ; Wakari— Messrs. John M'Glashan and Geo. Hepburn ; Anderson's Bay — Messrs. W. Morris and — Somerville; Green Itland — Messrs. Johnstone and H. Doig ; North Taieri— Messrs. Wm. Gibson and Reid. Messrs. Doig, Johnstone, Reid, Gibson, Hepburn, Hardy, Morris, Duncan, and M'Glashan, who were present, took their seats at the Board.

The calling of the present meeting was approved of, and minutes of meeting held on the 11th October last were confirmed and signed by the chairman. The letter of the Superintendent to the Secretary requesting him to prepare the Educational estimates, was read, as also a circular despatched to the secretary of each School committee requesting the estimates wanted, to which returns had been made from some, but as yet not from all, the School committees. The meeting then proceeded to the consideration of the reports, viz. : — Dunedin. —-The School Committee's Reporl referred to tlieir report of September 1860, and stated th^t a sum of £2500 would be required for jhe various objects therein referred to ; upon which the meeting resolved — 1. That, in the opinion of the Board, the present School Buildings should be secured to the Dunedin Schoor Committee, ' an 4 also a newSchool built in the vicinity of Knox's Church, for the erection of which a sura should be put on the Estimates. 2. That it be further recommended that a sum be placed on the Estimate*- for the erection of a new School at Caversham ; and 3. In addition to such sums, the half-year's salaries of the Teachers. ■ The following suras were recommeded to be placed on the Estimates :—: — j Port Chalmers— , Half-year's salary of teacher £50 Do. do., . do., Portobello 30 North-east Harbour— Teacher's salary 50 For fencing land » 3d North-east Valley— -Teacher's salary 50 For Heeded repair of Ventilator, zinc gutters, and for pegs 5 in addition to any balance of contingencies unpaid. A memorial from the inhabitants of Saddlehill district, praying to have it erected into an Educational district, and extract of a resolution of East Taieri school committee, cordially approving thereof were read ; upon which it was resolved " That consideration of the prayer of the memorial be postponed ; but that it be recommended to place £300 on the estimates for educational buildings in that district." North Taieri. — On the verbal report of Mr. Reid, one of the representatives of that district, £400 was recommended for school buildings, teacher's house, and necessary equipments ; also a sum of £25, as a grant in aid of Education in that district, which has hitherto received no assistance from Government.

Clutha. — A communication from the ReV. Mr. Bannerman, secretary to the school committee, was read ; upon which it was resolved to recommend a sum for the teachers' salaries for the half-year at the usual rates ; also £10 to paint the school buildings in Inch Clutha, South Clutha, and Warepa ; or £30 in all ; which sum to be in addition to the contingencies already voted. Further resolved, upon considering a memorial from certain settlers in the Clutha district praying for a side-school, and offering to guarantee payment to the teacher of sums opposite their respective names, amounting in the whole to £28, and also that part of Mr. Bannerman's communication relating thereto, " That the usual moiety of the salary of a teacher should be put on the estimates, and that a decision on the application for a grant for school buildings be deferred." The Secretary stated that no returns had been received from West Taieri, Waihola, Tokomairiro, Waikouaiti, or Goodwood ; the salaries of the teachers for the half-year, however, were placed on the estimates. The Board adjourned sine die.
