TOKOMAIRIRO ELECTION.

Mr. James Smith having lately resigned his seat for this district in the Provincial Council, the nomination of a member to fill the vacancy took place in the Schnollumse on the 2d inst. The Returning Officer having initiated the proceedings, Mr. J. K. Brown proposed Mr. James Adam, seconded by Mr. H. Clark. Mr. J. L. Gillies proposed, and Mr. W. Grey seconded, the nomination of Mr. John Hardy. Mr. William Popplewell was nominated by Mr. \V. 11. Mausford, seconded by Mr G. M'Kay. The candidates then briefly addressed the electors, after which a show of hands was called for, when there were For Mr. Hardy 20 „ Mr. Popplewell 6 „ Mr. Adam 2 Mr. Adam demanded a poll, which took place on Tuesday last, and closed with the following result: — TOK.OMAIIURO. WAIHOLA. TOTAL. For Mr. Hardy 34 19 55 „ Mr. Popplewell... 12 2 14 „ Mr. Adam 9 1 10 The Returning Officer then declared Mr« John Hardy duly elected.
