Were the Council to consult the interests of the Northern portion of the Jrrovince, to strike out all the Southern items ■would be wise, but it was not a question that the Council would settle upon interest. He believed it would be found that they had received more money from the South than they v e *P ended ther e, and as a matter of justice they should proceed with public works in the South, irrespective of the question of separation. If the South was determined to be . separated, he trusted it would be done without iwoiecessary irritation on either side, so that the two Provinces might act amicably in the settlement of questions of steam communication and other objects in which they must act in unison. Of course, if the revenue from land sales fell ofl^ public works would have to be stopped, and that should be done with a view to the claims of both North and South. . If it was proposed to strike out the Southern items, it had better be done upon a resolution of the Council. Mr. Guub explained that he had no serious intention of making such a proposal. Mr. M'Nab thought that the road ought to gp by Wallace Town ; but if the Government chose to make both roads, he had no objection. After considerable discussion, the item was voted at £3000.
