LOWE, TN returning thanks to his patrons of last ■*■ season, begs leave to announce that he will RESUME HIS CLASSES for the above accomplishments, in his Hall, Maclaggan-street, on MONDAY, the sth of September. In order to suit pupils attending other classes, Mr. Lowe's Class hours will be— *=■ Private Class.— On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, at half-past 4. Terms : £1 1 Is. 6d. per month. Public Class.— On Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, at half-past 4 p.m. Terms: £1 Is. per month. In future Mr. Lowe's Season in Dunedin will be during the months of September, October, November and December. Evening Class for Ladies, from 7 to 8, three lessons per week. Evening Class for Gentlemen, from 8 to 9, three lessons per week. Terms : £2 2s. per month. Mr. Lowe wishes to devote part of his time to the tuition of the theory of Music, the Pianoforte, and Violin, and will be happy to make any arrangements to suit his pupils. CIIAS. S. DENNIS begs to intimate to those resident in Invercargill, and its vicinity, that, as he has now begun building premises on the opposite side of the Creek to the Town, he hopes to be able to commence his business as SCHOOLMASTER in about a fortnight from the present date, so as to meet the requirements of the place. The Schoolhouse is so constructed as to afford ample accommodation for 70 or 80 Children, and is allowed by competent judges to be a most suitable site for its required purpose. Parents desirous of sending their children to this School are requested to make known the number they may each purpose sending, either to T. J. White, Esq., or James Blacklock, Esq., merchants, or to Mr. C. S. D. in person, as soon as is convenient. Mr. C. S. I). also begs to acquaint the public that as he does not receive any assistance whatever from the Board of Education, it remains for him eagerly to solicit the patronage of Parents who have children, who, though they be daily increasing in growth, yet are hourly decreasing in their first requirements for a profession or trade. At the sanietime he begs to assure those Parents that nothing shall be omitted by him in endeavouring to° gain not only their good esteem, but also that first and most essential point in every master— namely, the love, gratitude, and, finally, the respect of all their young ones entrusted to his trainin", always bearing strictly in mind the purpose for which they are so entrusted, and carefully guarding against the least encouragement of those vices which are but too prominent in the minds of most young people. Until further notice, this School will only consist of Daily Scholars. All the required Books will be supplied by the Proprietor at the lowest cost price. REPORT of a Preliminary Meeting, held in the Court House Dunedin, on Thursday, 4th August 1859, palled by Circular for the purpose of considering the steps to be taken to form a Society for elevating the condition of the Maories within the Province of Otago. Present— The Rev. Messrs. Will, Hood, Johnston, the Hon. J. H. Harris, Messrs. J. M'Glashan, A. W. Morris, John Jones, Edward Lee, Thomas Dick, Alexander Livingstone, and William Stuart. The Rev. Mr. Will proposed that Mr. M'Glashan be requested to take the Chair. Seconded Tsy Mr Morris. Mr. M'Glashan took the Chair accordingly. The meeting appointed Mr. Stuart Interim Secretary. The Circular calling the Meeting was read, and Letters of Apology from Mr. W\ Gordon Rich, Wairuna, and Mr. John Blacklock, Invercargill. " It was resolved that a Public Meeting be called by Advertisement in the Newspapers by the Interim Secretary, for Tuesday Evening, lGth current, at half- past Six o'clock p.m., m the School House, Dunedin, for the purpose of constituting the Society and otherwise carrying out its object. " It was resolved, after some discussion, to submit the following Draft Rules to the Public Meeting." DRAFT RULES OF THE SOCIETY For Elevating the Condition of the Maories within the Province of Otago. "I. The Name of the Society shall be the Society for Elevating the Condition of the Alaoiies within the Province of Otago. " 11. The Object of the Society shall be the Amelioration of the Condition, physical, moral, ami leiigious, of the Aboiiginal and Half-caste Population of the Province. " 111. The Members of the Society shall be Annual Subscribe] s often shillings and upwards, and donors of ten pounds and upwards. " IV. The business of the Society shall be conducted by an Ordinary Committee of Management, consisting of a President, Vice-Presidents, Treasurer, Secretary, and other Members, who shall have power to add to their number ; and by an Extraordinary Committee who shall, however, be summoned to attend on occasions only when the Ordinary Committee shall require their presence. "V. There shall be also a Ladies' Committee who shall give their aid in the business of the Society, and shall appoint their own Office-bearers. "VI. Three Membeis shall form a quorum of each Committee. " VII. The names of the Members of the Society shall be published yearly ; and there shall be an Annual General Meeting of the Members for receiving reports of the business of the past year, the election of Office-beareis, and such other business as may be brought befo\e the Heeling. "VIII. The Oidinary Committee shall have power to make Bye-laws and to call special meetings of the Society." "It was resolved that the Minutes of this Meeting be published." The Rev. Mr Will moved a vote of thanks to the Chairman, which was carried with acclamation. The Meeting then adjourned. IN ACCORDANCE with the above Resolution, A PUBLIC MEETING will be held in the School House. Dunedin, on the evening ! of TUESDAY, 16th current, at half-past §ix o'clock, for the purpose of constituting the Society and otherwise carrying out its Object. Ladies ore invited to a/tend.
