MORTALITY OF CHILDREN.
(From the Sydney Herald ) An impression having got abroad that the mortality of children within the city of Sydney is extraordinarily high, and without a parallel in the modern experience of towns in Britain, we have instituted a very careful inquiry into the facts, with the view of ascertaining how for the impression is or is not correct. ***** The proportion of children under the age of five to the whole population of New South Wales is, as nearly as cun be deduced from the last census returns, about 15 per cent. ; while j in England it is only 13. In Sydney it is about 13, in London 12, in Edinburgh 10. The proportions of minors are — in Sydney 48 per cent., in Glasgow 44, in Edinburgh 41. To these inequalities due weight should be attached in studying the subjoined tables. We propose comparing the mortality of infant children in Sydney with that of children of the same ages in ei^ht of the principal towns of England and Scotland respectively :—: —
