LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
The arrivals since our last issue have been the barque " Melbourne," from Newcastle with 62 horses and general cargo, and the Provincial steamer " Lord Ashley," by which latter vessel we have received our papers from th>e various Provinces except Auckland. The intelligence they contain, however, is of no particular interest. Bin i,r>i^g axi) Lavd Society. — The fourth quarterly nice* ing of this Society was held on j Monday evening, wb.cn the subscriptions col- | lected during the quaiter, amounting to £GSB ss. Id., were disposed of to sovcial of the members at the following premiums, which exhibit a considerable decline on those of the previous quarter nights, showing that the demand for money was less urgent than on former occasions : —

Edwards, M.A.. has been j appointed to the incumbency of the Episcopal ! Church in Dunedin, and i- expected to arrive ' here by the " Lord Ashley" on her next trip. I The present inctnnbenl, Mr. \V\,ttt, has been requested by the Bishop of the dioce-e to establish a college in this town. The Hall lately erected by Mr. Lowe in , Maclaggan street v. as opened on SatuuLvy last with a juvenile ball, to which the parents of! the children were imitcd. The attendance,' owing to the state of the weather, w.is not nu- 1 meroiis, but the pupils did credit to Mr. \,v\ c's proficiency as a teacher. The u^e of the Hall for public purposes may be obtained, which will be an additional convenience, -is we have not many buildings in Dunedin open for the j purpose. !
A. C. Strode, Esq. — We observe that Mr. Strode has been appointed Undent Magistrate for Lyttelton. The Canterbury papers furnishes the followinir information: — '"'ihe General Government has considered the piopriet}' of appointing a resident Maj,i^trite specially *br Lyttelton, and hr.s selected Mr. A. Chetham Strode, late Resident Magistrate at Dunedin, to fill the appointment. Mr. Strode has been for time on a visit to England, on leave of absence, but is bhortly expected to return to the colony."
