THE OTAGO WITNESS. Dunedin, Saturday, June 19, 1858.
Owing to the arrival yesterday of the James Daly from Auckland, with important news from the home country, we have thrown aside our remarks upon various local matters in order to place before our readers the latest intelligence. We are indebted to F. Banks, Esq., of the firm of Miles, Kington, & Co., for the latest intelligence — that gentleman having obligingly furnished us with a copy of the " Home News" Af the 16th March, the only English paper which has arrived by the James Daly. By
the. same opportunity we have Auckland papers to the 12th May : they are singularly destitute of information. The legislation of the General Assembly was progressing, but the new members had not anived. The " Boundaries of Provinces Bill," the effect of which is to empower the Government to appoint a Commissioner to arrange disputed boundaries of Provinces, had passed the Lower House, and will probably become law.
The few Canterbury and Nelson papers before us, of dates to the 29th of May, are chiefly reprints of the Auckland papers. Mr. Crosby Ward had been returned, as a Member of the General Assembly for Lyttelton, without opposition.
We have also been favoured, by John Jones, Esq., with a copy of the " Melbourne Argus," of the 13th of May, by which we learn that the Grain Market was active, with a prospect of a rise. We give the Market quotations in another column.
