GENERAL ROAD BOARD
The usual monthly meeting of the Acting Committee of the General Boaid of Road Trustees was held in the Road Office, Dunedin, on the Ist hist. Present — Messrs. Fulton, M'Gregor, Ridley, Hepburn, Andrew, Calder, and Gibson. Mr. Macandrew in the Chair.
The previous minutes were read and eonfiimed,
The Clerk )ead an extiact from the minutes of a meeting of the Portobello District Trustees, reiolving to levy a rate on lands within their distiict of sixpence per acre towards the dealing of the main line to Portobello, and requesting the Boaid to appiove of the same.
Resolved— " That on being furnished with the infoi mation as required by the 27th clause of the Roads' Oidinance, the Cleik be instructed to give notice that objections to the rate will be heard at the School-house, Portobello, on a date to be hereafter fixed ; and that Messis. Every, Ridley, and Thomson be appointed a committee to hear the same, if any, and to repor);."
The Clerk read tenders for clearing a road line to Portobello.
Resolved—" That the tender of Popham and Jones be accepted, (being the lowest — 12s. 6d. per chain), provided they give bonds for the due execution of the whole line within three months from the signing of the contract — themselves and two sureties in £50 for non-fulfilment; and that the Clerk be directed to see that the contract and bond are in legal form. Provided further, that in the event of the owners of sections through which the line passes preferring to clear the line through their own ground in terms of the specification, they shall be allowed compensation at the rate of 12s. 6d. per chain, and that a clause be inserted into Popham and Jones' contract to that effect."
Resolved — " That the Anderson's Bay Trustees be informed that the Board is prepared to go on with the road line to Portobello forthwith, and that it will apply for the proceeds of the distiict rate as soon as they can collect it ; and recommend further, that they at once take the necessary steps in the matter."
The Clerk read Mr. Oliver's Report for the month. With respect to the proposed iine to Blueskin,
Resolved — " That Mr. Oliver be requested to furnish the Committee with fuither details as to the piobable expense, and that with this viesv he be authorised to incur whatever expenditure may be absolutely requisite in order to enable him to do
Resolved — "That the Clerk be authorised to purchase the instalments for the use of the Road Board, as in terms of his agreement with Mr. Thomson."
The Clerk read two tenders for a horse bridge over Silver Stream, and it was resolved that the tender of Mr. Robert Pearson be accepted.
With reference to Mr. Russell's continued refusal to allow- the road line to pass through his land, as formerly agreed to by a letter under his hand, it was resolved that the whole matter be laid before the Provincial Solicitor for his legal opinion thereon.
Resolved — " That the claim made by Mr. Haberfield, of Moeraki, for a certain portion of land to be allowed him in lieu of that about to be taken up as a road line through his land, be remitted to his Honor the Deputy -Superintendent, respectfully requesting that the application be acceded to,"
Resolved—" That the Treasurer be authorised to pay the sum of £56 lGs. Sd. to the Road Inspector, to enable him to pay the contracts now completed for bridging and bush cutting on Moeraki road line."
Resolved— " That the Chairman and Clerk be authorised to sign warrants for £327 7s. 10d., being the amount of expenditure for May."
The Board then adjourned till the first Tuesday of July next, at II o'clock.
