MELBOURNE.
'Colonel Eobins arrived by the steamer " European" for the purpose of purchasing troop horses for the Indian Government. The Government had given employment on public works to several hundreds of the unemployed at 6s. per day, which assisted to a certain extent, in abating tlie distress arising from an overcrowded labour market. A sum of £25.000 had been placed on the Estimates for the purpose of affording additional labour to the unemployed. Several cases of small- pox had occurred on board the " Commodore Perry," and some of the pnssengers, after landing from the vessel in Melbourne, were attacked with that scourging disease, and created great alarm amongst the inhabitants. As soon as the circumstance became known the vessel was immediately placed in quarantine, and every precaution taken to prevent the spread of the disease.
