The Superintendent andi'Gouricil (saysthe\ " Lyttelton Times," July 29) were dissolved by a proclamation of his Excellency, dated the 14th instant, fend writs have come down for the new election. We understand, however,' that the election of the Superintendent will not come off for! "three months, as time must be given for the formation and revising of Electoral Rolls in' the .Districts, established by the new Provincial Gouncil Extension Ordinance, which has received the Governor's assent. According to the- Constitution Act, the ,Council cannot be elected until after, the election of the Superintendent. . — Auckland, Nelson, and Wellington will during the next few months sympathise with Canterbury in the anxiety and excitement of a general .provincial election. The ceremony of laying the foundation of Christ's College was performed on the morning of Friday, the 24th July. Testimonial. — On the 25th July, a meeting largely attended by -representatives of the different interests in the province was held at the Royal Hotel in Christchurch, for' the purpose of appointing a committee to raise subscriptions for a testimonial to James Edward FitzGerald, Esq., Superintendent of Canterbury, his Honor the Superintendent and Mrs. FitzGerald to be invited to a public breakfast, on which occasion the testimonial is to be presented. About £180 was collected in the room alone before the meeting separated. Mr. Alport held a sale at Messrs. J. T. Peacock & Co.'s stores on Wednesday last. The following were about the average of the prices : — Pyrmont sperm candles realized Is. 4d. to Is. 6d. per lb. ; bottled fruits 12s. to 15s. per dozen ; Whybrow's pickles 7s. per dozen. A small lot of American hams, 9 £d. per lb. ; soap, Liverpool and Sydney, and salad oil were put up, but did not find buyers. Tea, in canisters, was sold at from 50s. to 555. per case of 481b5. ; ground coffee Bd., raw do. 9d. ; currants 6£d. to Bd. ; muscatel raisins, Is. to Is. 2d. ; dried apples, 7d. ; rice, 2£d. ; cocoa, 10£ d .; ground ginger B£d. to lOd. ; split peas, 2d. to 2£d. Large mahogany framed toilet glasses fetched from 30s. to 475. 6d. each ; cane-backed rocking chairs 305. ; japanned do. 225. ; ' a cheffonier with plate glass. panelled doors, and whatnot top, 605. ; small mahogany work tables, 10s. to 20s. each ; nests of 8 tubs, 355. Several lots of first-class crockery, consisting of breakfast and tea ware and a dinner service, found no purchasers, though offered at very low prices. A few hundredweight of onions were sold at from l£d. to 2^d. per lb. A saddle and appurtenances fetched £2 12s. 6d., and a few lots of waggon whips from 245. to 30s. per dozen. -
