Dunedln, 25th May 1854. English Landlords in Ireland. — There has been nothing even approaching to an English colonization of Ireland. The English purchases have been extensive, it is true. They include twosevenths of the entire acreage sold, but, with a few exceptions, they are not the purchases of settlers. Of the whole 181, perhaps 70 have come to live in Ireland. Of these 70, and of the remaining 111, it is questionable how many in reality were Irish by birth ; for we know that many purchases were made by Irishmen resident in England, and the return makes no distinction touching them. Strange Custom. — A most extraordinary custom prevails among the Vitzres, a powerful tribe, occupying an extensive district in Cabul, among the mountains between Persia and India. It is, ia fact, a female prerogative that has no parallel among any other people upon the face of the earth, and that reverses what we are in the habit of considering the natural order of things— the women choose their husbands, and not the husbands their wives. If a woman be nleased with a man, she sends the drummer of the camp to pin a handkerchief to his cap, with a pin whicl she used to fasten her hair. The drummer watches his opportunity, and does this in public, naming the woman, and the man is obliged to marry if he can pay her price to her father. A Scotch lady entered a grocer's shop lately for the purpose of procuring a supply of candles. On being informed by the shopkeeper that the price had risen, and that it was in consequence of the prospect of war with Russia, ' Guid save us,' was the rejoinder, ' are they gaun to fecht wi' candle licht noo !' Some exchange paper illustrates the advantages of a ' division of labour' by 'the following anecdote : A certain preacher was holding forth to a somewhat wearied congregation, when he lifted up his eyes to the gallery, and beheld a youngster pelting the people below with chestnuts. The preacher was about to administer ex cathedra a sharp and stringent reprimand for this flagrant act of impiety and disrer spect, but the youth, anticipating him, bawled out at the top of his voice — ' You -mind your preaching, daddy, and I'll keep 'em awake.' ' Get away ! get away !' said an embarrassed matron to a houseless Irishman, who was begging a night's lodging, ' this is no place for you. _ Go away, for shame ! this- is the lying-in hospital.' ' Oeh, indeed, thin,' replied the outcast, ' its the veiy place for me, for I've been lying out these three nights, so I have/
